They are called “bell schedules” because bells or chimes would ring traditionally to signal the beginning and end of different periods or classes in a school setting. However, the concept of bell schedules extends beyond just education and is used in various settings.
This method of marking time spread by communal usage because all seafarers share citizenship in a single nation: the sea. The eighth bell sounds the end of the last watchman shift. Seven bells is right before “the end”. In sailor-speak, “8 bells” is the euphemism for death.
Measure time onboard ship. One bell sounds for each half hour. One bell means 12:30, two bells mean 1:00, three bells mean 1:30, and so on until 4:00 (eight bells).
